nursing professionalism proposes to separate RNs with associate degrees from those with BS degrees. In the fall of 2003, nursing researcher Linda H. Aiken and her colleagues published a study
in the Journal of the American Medical Association that indicated that surgical patients who are treated in hospitals where the majority of RNs hold a BS degree have a survival
advantage (Long, Bernier and Aiken, 2004). This ignited a controversy across the profession that suggests that considerable ill feeling was generated. As this debate suggests, differentiating between RNs with associate
degrees and those with baccalaureate degrees can be a source of ill will within a staff rather than fostering cooperation. Nevertheless, it is important to foster continuing professional development among
