Fast forward to the twenty-first century and it is clear how nurses play an integral role in the overall development and application of standards of care, the transmission of scientific and humanistic caring, professional performance, ethics, as well as the level of competency expected from the industry. The role of philosophical temperament and personality is a critical component in the nursing field, inasmuch as a singular individual is responsible for such a significant burden: guiding someone out of emotional and physical turmoil. Characteristics such as patience, understanding and empathy are not only essential for a nurse to possess but they represent the very foundation of this particular type of professional assistance. In addition to this aspect, however, is that of a realistic knowledge of how to address certain crises, which is acquired only through the implementation of proper theoretical training. Nursing theories, which help to fortify the fundamental elements of caregiving, inasmuch as the application of nursing requires much more than merely administering drugs and treatments; rather, the overall concentration of nursing is based significantly more within the psychological components of the patient/caregiver relationship than most people realize. It is important for the student to consider how successful nurses apply theories that effectively address the intrinsic four paradigms: nursing, health, person and environment. In its purest form, this transformational approach seeks to treat the entire being as a single entity, rather than address it as a singular component.
