of the transition from clinician to manager, it is necessary to relate some of the developments regarding nursing leadership and assess the transition from registered nurse to nursing unit manager.
Researchers have indicated that 2 out of every 3 registered nurses (RNs) work in the hospital setting, and provide many different direct care functions, including, but not limited to:
checking vital signs, acting as patient advocates, providing medical treatments prescribed by physicians, and keeping accurate records of changes in patient status (Nurse, 2002). RNs in the hospital
setting often function as either operating room or critical care providers, and can act as triage nurses (assessing the need for care and the immediacy of need), determine the need
for attention by physicians, and assess problems that result from either interventions or the lack of interventions for the patient. RNs often act as the liaison between the patient
and their physicians, and work to meet the needs of the patient while they are in the hospital setting (Nurse, 2002; See also Cook, Green and Top, 2001).
In addition to their roles in the carative environment, RNs may also take on educational roles, providing important instruction, especially in teaching hospitals (RN, 2000). This type of educational
support is not something provided by other nursing professionals, like LPNs or certified nurses aids (CNAs). RNs are generally trained in areas of ethics and in particular medical practices,
