A 7 page paper analyzing the source of one medical center’s vice president’s effective leadership. Effective leaders must possess an optimum blend of “people skills” and technical knowledge. This is particularly true in nursing, perhaps more so than in any other field. Ability alone cannot serve to make a manager’s leadership truly effective. The organizational structure also must be designed in such a way that it provides the leader with the freedom necessary to exercise creativity and effective leadership. This paper discusses an effective leader at Hamot Medical Center in terms of the types of leadership theory she uses and the support that the medical center’s organizational structure provides. the medical centers organizational structure provides. Introduction After the Japanese "miracle" had come to be recognized within the US and Total Quality Management
(TQM) had begun making fledgling appearances in US manufacturing, the "father of TQM" gave us his famous "14 Points" delineated for the purpose of enabling the manufacturer to operate under
the principles of TQM and the participatory management style that it requires. Several of Demings (1986) 14 Points conclude with the statement, "substitute leadership" (p. 26). Nearly 20
years later, there is still confusion over the differences between management and leadership. Organizational Structure Nurses occupy three managerial positions at the Hamot
Medical Center, all of which are included in Clinical Operations. All of these nurses are RNs, and all hold the office of Vice President. The departments that they
head are Quality, Nursing and Surgical Services. The formal leader on which this paper will focus is the Vice President of Nursing, R. Mares, RN, VP, CNO. Though
