of five African American children suffers from regular asthma attacks. It has been estimated that approximately 390,000 children in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange counties suffer from asthma.
While the precise cause of this increase in the incidence of childhood asthma, the exhaust from the growing number of cars and trucks in the area is a prime candidate
among the suspected causes (Bostwick, 2004). Air pollution is known to retard lung development in children, cause increased asthma among athletes and cause symptoms ranging from coughs to runny
noses (Bostwick, 2004). Nevertheless, experts also argue that many factors could be causing the asthma epidemic. Some scientists propose that asthma is an auto-immune reaction that comes from modern living
conditions that do not expose individuals to the tons of infectious elements to which immune systems were previously exposed. Other experts, however, feel that the principal culprit is obviously air
pollution. While smog and ozone levels have fallen in Southern California over the last several decades, there has been no progress for the last fives years and, in many ways,
air pollution is getting worse (Bostwick, 2004). Expansion of shipping in the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, which has escalated the truck traffic that comes from more

a few days according to USC researchers. Children who play team sports are also statistically more likely to develop asthma over children who live more sedentary lives watching TV indoors
where ozone levels are lower (Bostwick, 2004). Furthermore, weather conditions in LA over the last two summers have caused increased levels of air pollution (Bostwick, 2004). Bailit (2002) points
