Our primary concern, after all is the optimization of patient welfare. Sometimes, however, this concern is complicated by such factors as administrative guidelines and expectations, expectations which can run
contrary to our perception of the optimum treatment plan or decision. Even in the face of such dilemmas, however, we can turn to our underlying professional ethics and morals to
make the right decision. While the nursing profession tends to concentrate on science in regard to the manner in which they optimize patient
welfare, in reality there are numerous components of our nursing knowledge which interact to determine patient outcome. Carper (1978) delineates four basic components of knowledge: Emperics, ethics, personal
knowledge, and esthetics. While each of these areas are important, this paper will concentrated on the importance of ethics the nursing practice. It should be emphasized as well,
however, that as a profession nursing has the responsibility to play an active role in legislation and law making which influence such decisions. It is through our status as
health care professionals that such a role is not only valued but critical. Nursing, of course, is a professional rather than simply an
occupational pursuit. It belongs, according to Dougherty (1996), among the three time honored professions of theology, law and medicine. As such it has in place professional codes and
