A 15 page paper. The purpose of this study was to conduct an academic critical appraisal related to literature review on critical thinking skills and concept mapping. Five articles are reviewed. In each, the participants in the study were baccalaureate nursing students. Each article discusses critical thinking skills and concept mapping. The earliest article is from 1999 and the latest articles are from 2006, thus, a range in time is presented. This demonstrates the long and ongoing emphasis on critical thinking as well as an emphasis on concept mapping as a tool to develop critical thinking skills. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

this the shortage in nursing that we constantly hear about and the nurses job becomes even more challenging. One skill that has been consistently identified for at least the
last fifteen years as essential for nursing is critical thinking. Inherent in this category is the ability to solve problems effectively and properly. Critical thinking is so important that it
is a criterion for the accreditation of nursing education programs. That means these programs must prove that they include training in this crucial skill. Several challenges result from this
criterion. First of all, how is critical thinking defined? How can it be demonstrated? How can it be assessed? What tools are available to help students in nursing education to
develop critical thinking skills? And, what tools are available for practitioners to enhance and expand their thinking approaches? These are all important questions because they must be answered before a
nurse education program can make certain it is training nursing candidates in these skills. One approach that has been linked with developing and enhancing critical thinking skills is concept
mapping. This is not a new approach but it is one that has gained a great deal of attention in the last several years. Concept mapping involves both deductive and
inductive thinking. It is a metacognitive approach that forces the designer to think in a hierarchical fashion but also to think about what links one concept with another. It is
