there is no consensus among healthcare professionals as to what, precisely, constitutes abuse of the elderly. In offering various definitions, Harris (2006) begins to broach the subject of why elder
abuse is sometimes ambiguous, requiring nuances of meaning. For example, if an adult daughter screams at her mother for repeatedly refusing to eat, is this verbal abuse or an understandable
reaction to a difficult situation (Harris, 2006). If the nurse witnessing this scene consider the daughter to have the best interests of the elderly mother at heart, does this make
her behavior more acceptable? At what point, should the nurse take steps to protect the elderly? These questions indicate some of the ethical dilemmas that nurses face when dealing with
the needs of elderly patients. According to British authorities, elder abuse may run as high as 1 in 20 older people experiencing some form of abuse (Harris, 2006). Considering
that all industrialized countries have similar societal situations, it may be safe to assume that a similar proportion of abused elderly exist in other countries. It is often problematic for
a nurse to determine which elderly patients are being abused because a sense of shame or a desire to protect the family member who is the abuser may prevent older
people from reporting and/or complaining about abusive treatment (Harris, 2006). A myth concerning abuse against the elderly is that this happens primarily in institutional settings, such as nursing homes. In
