very comprehensive consent forms for doing a nursing research study? Advantages Our society seems to be becoming more litigious, even with the proliferation
of disclaimers and warnings that have resulted from previous legal battles. The very comprehensive consent form can help protect the researcher and the researchers organization from future lawsuits such
as those mentioned in the lecture as arising from the use of Phen phen. One of the purposes of clinical trials is to
discover side effects that may result from new drugs, and many of these side effects can be dismissed as being "nothing," or as being attributable to some other factor.
If the side effects that have been noted as being possible during the course of pretrials truly did result from the use of the experimental drug, then the comprehensive consent
form can alert study participants to the fact that these side effects may arise. If one of these side effects is headache, as example, then the study participant may
have a heightened awareness that s/he needs to report the occurrence of headache. Without the comprehensive consent form, the participant experiencing headache may merely dismiss it without reporting it
to researchers. Disadvantages One of the disadvantages is the same factor that also can be seen as an advantage. If a
study participant experiences a headache during the trial, s/he may be overly concerned about reporting any and every twinge that occurs during the course of the trial. This can
