in a Science of Nursing program. By providing nursing care within missionary service, I observed firsthand how people in underdeveloped, poverty-stricken Asian countries are driven by their desire to obtain
the necessities of life, that is, sufficient food, clothing and shelter to survive. As these people must remain focused on how to obtain enough food, they have no alternative but
to regard health consideration as a low priority. The results of poverty and the necessity of giving health consideration a low priority in their lives were quite evident, as
people sought healthcare only when compelled to by pain and serious illness. This drove home to me the dire need of much of the world for increased and adaptable nursing
care that is designed to meet the needs of these people and help them with the arduous tasks of living in the midst of dire poverty. My nursing experience within
an acute care setting frequently caused my thoughts to turn to the topics of prevention and treatment of illness and chronic disease, as well as to the nature of these
maladies. The extremely limited options of the patients I saw on a daily basis has bothered me tremendously. Therefore, it is my goal to expand my skills and build
upon the nursing knowledge that I already possess in order to facilitate my helping larger number of people through the mediums of prevention and primary care, rather than just relying
on tertiary care. It is my hope and goal to bring the knowledge and skills that I will acquire as a candidate in give name of universitys degree program to
