all people in the United States have been diagnosed with some form of hypertension and hypertension has been linked to heart disease, the leading cause of death in this country
(Kaplan, 1996). As a result, researchers have tried to determine the best methods of prevention and control of hypertension in order to improve longevity and reduce cardiac and neurological
complications. Researchers have identified obesity as a factor in the rise in hypertension rates in this country over the past five
decades (Geleignse, Kok and Grobbee, 2004). In fact, it has been maintained that individuals with obesity are more likely to develop hypertension (Geleignse, Kok and Grobbee, 2004). This
has led researchers to consider whether weight reduction in hypertensive patients is an effective method for controlling hypertension. Researchers have identified
dietary and lifestyle issues as mitigating factors in the development of hypertension in populations in the Western world (Geleijnse, Kok and Grobbee, 2004). While weight is a contributing factor,
researchers have also considered whether dietary factors that correspond with obesity also play a significant factor in the onset of obesity. Geleignse, Kok and Grobbee (2004) found that hypertension,
defined as a systolic blood pressure of greater than or equal to 140 mm/Hg) was linked most commonly to individuals whoa re overweight (Spencer and Lip, 1999). The researchers
also found, though, that other factors, including lack of physical activity, high sodium intake, low potassium and magnesium levels all played a role in increasing hypertension rates in countries worldwide.
The product of the research by Geleignse, Kok and Grobbee (2004) was that both obesity and diet were implicated as major concerns in the onset of hypertension in Western
