Robert L. Allen is just one contemporary commentator, however, that supports reparations for blacks. Using history as a backdrop, Allen contends that blacks are more than entitled to economic reimbursement, i.e. reparations, not just for the torment and horror that their ancestors faced during slavery but for the personal and economic subjugation they have faced throughout their history in the Americas. Allen reviews a long list of individuals and organizations that have fought unsuccessfully to accomplish what they felt was long overdue. The intent of this paper is to argue that Allen and all those supporting reparations before him were and are correct. It was the blood and sweat of slaves and their descendants that built the infrastructure of this country. They most certainly are entitled to economic reimbursement for all the injustices they have faced throughout the history of that same country! The issue of reparations, of course, is one that revolves around our government itself. It might be contended, in fact, that all of the historical problems that have been faced by blacks in this country can be traced by the actions of the very government whose existence is predicated on equality for all. In truth, however, there has historically been anything but equality in this country. There are, in fact, many arguments that support the contention that reparations are more than justified in the United States. The first black slaves entered North America in 1619.
