the author the time and space to explore such things as setting, theme, motivation and character development in depth. It can be argued that people read novels (as opposed to
non-fiction books) for as many reasons as there are readers. Its a very individual thing, but perhaps they read to escape their own reality for a time, or to participate
vicariously in a great adventure, or to indulge in a romance. Well-researched novels also provide a painless way to learn about periods in history. As a well-rounded reader, the student
might read a mix of novels and non-fiction works. The purpose for reading is thus two-fold: the novels are read for pure enjoyment and the non-fiction to learn about subjects
of interest. The non-fiction books often include works on the American Civil War, the rise of Nazism, with a great many travel books mixed in. The single favorite fiction book
might well be The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkiens book is one that many people re-read repeatedly, getting something new out of it each time. Its
a favorite because it is full of adventure, song, deep emotion, a portrayal of true friendship and sacrifice, and how even the smallest person can have a significant impact on
the culture of his day. Its also a favorite because Tolkiens talent at creating Middle Earth is so vast that the entire setting is totally believable. A reader can get
so caught up in the story that he or she is actually transported to Hobbiton, or Rivendell, Moria or Lothlorien. At times, he creates such an atmosphere of terror that
