former oil industry executive turned novelist, is a man of the world. Born in Jordan, a citizen of Saudi Arabia, and a graduate of the University of Belgrade with
a degree in oil economics, his controversial satirizing of an Arab emir and the ruling oil elites in this novel were responsible for his loss of citizenship and the banning
of his books in the region. Originally published in Lebanon in 1984, Cities of Salt was translated by Peter Theroux into English and published by New Yorks Random House
three years later. The plot features a topic with which the author is most familiar - the Middle East oil industry - and focuses on how the drilling for
oil by Americans during the 1930s disrupted the environment and the lives of the Bedouin peoples who called the desert oasis Wadi al-Uyoun home. The predominant theme in
Cities of Salt is that of increasing class divisions that result from the introduction of capitalism into society. Before the American foreigners intruded upon the calm of Wadi al-Uyoun,
people did not work for money, and therefore the traditional (and older) residents were understandably suspicious. Despite assurances that the village and its people would prosper as employees of
this new American oil company venture, distinctions are almost immediately evident. The Harrani or workers are quickly divided into factions based upon ethnicity with the Americans living far better
than their Arab laborer counterparts despite doing the same jobs. While the Americans are enjoying lavish accommodations including swimming pools and air-conditioning, the Arabs primitively subsist in cramped and
