to the community. In the present day, police authorities in general are much more complicated organisational structures than was the case in the past and have more diverse interactions with
the public as a whole, as well as with the private sector and with other social welfare services.
In theory, one could say that the only objective of a police force should be to protect the public and reduce crime: however, as can be
seen from the complaints and criticisms which have been levelled at the police in recent years this has not always necessarily been the case. There have been cases of prisoners
suffering injuries and death while in police custody, wrongful arrests and convictions, and several instances of whole authorities being found guilty of institutionalised racism. Taking an overview of any police
authority, therefore, has to look at both the positive and negative aspects of the organisations performance in the light of the relationship which they have with the community as a
whole. The Nottinghamshire police authority, along with other local authorities, has since 2000 been required
by statute to ensure that those in the community are receiving value for money from the service provided by the police as well making continuous improvements to the service which
