input data and be alerted of most anything. Notification Services "can send timely, personalized messages to thousands or millions of subscribers, and can deliver the messages to a wide variety
of devices" ("SQL Server Notification Services," 2007). There are a variety of notification services available and they are aligned with different purposes. Sometimes, someone just wants a reminder to be
sent to them in some form so that they do not forget special days like birthdays or anniversaries. Others want news alerts. These are popular on AOL for example. One
may sign up for Amber alerts or when breaking news occurs. With this feature, someone who has signed on for the service receives an email notification of an event. Of
course, today, there are companies which specialize in this technology and will allow one to join in order to be apprised of many different types of information. Memo to
Me is a free reminder service that sends electronic notifications to remind someone of a birthday, anniversary, upcoming event, or even simply to take out the trash ("Memo to Me,"
2007). Of course, many computers are equipped with remainder features that exist on software such as iCal. Someone can set up a recurring event, such as taking out the garbage
twice per week. Then a reminder alarm is set for perhaps an hour prior to the event taking place. That is a reminder, but it is not a reminder service.
