contrasted sharply against guilt which one levels against ones self. For instance, Proctor is condemned by the courts due to the circumstances that occur during his appearance at court to
condemn Abigail, but it is ultimately his own sense of guilt that is his undoing; if he had exposed Abigail earlier, and been entirely forthcoming about his own failings, the
issue could have been averted. In the end, he is less concerned with being declared innocent by the courts than in being declared innocent by Elizabeth, and being able to
forgive himself of his guilt. * The theme of society versus the individual is made most evident by the way in which the agents of "civilized society", the magistrates,
wealthy landowners, and preachers, have extremely unilateral control over the lives of the individual. Many individuals lives are destroyed over the course of the play, because of the misguided whims
of society as a whole, and its representative agents. * Duty, a dominant theme in the Crucible, is expressed most clearly in the character of Hale. Hale is called forth
to preside over the crisis, and attempts to attend to it as a matter of duty, using the full scope of his academic learning in demonology and witchcraft. However, he
begins to question this duty when Danforth begins to indiscriminately sentence townspeople to death on the loosest of accusations. By the end of the play, he no longer holds to
any notions of duty to find the truth and actively compels Proctor and the others to lie to save themselves. The idea is that duty can be a destructive instrument
