Though their dedication to their religion is obvious, the cultural differences in society then and now often mask whether their personal commitment to their God matched the fervor with which they made outward show. Reading John Winthrops own account of his personal journey toward Christian maturity removes any doubt that his dedication to his God was as real in his heart as it was apparent in his court. Winthrops Style The self-deprecating tone of Winthrops account of his early years as a Christian is disconcerting, given the reputation for severity that has grown around him over the centuries. He relays that he was quite a normal young man, given to various types of adolescent frivolities on which he later seemed to pass judgment rather harshly. He is quick to ensure that the reader understands that even though he was far from the model young man, he nevertheless was not one of the completely depraved, however. "In my youth I was very lewdly disposed, inclining unto and attempting ... all kind of wickednesse, except swearing and scorning religion" (p. 234). Even these exceptions he attributes to the quality of his education, rather than to his natural bent, however. Though he was raised in and surrounded with religion, it was not until illness prevented normal activity that he actually discovered God. Winthrop wrote this account in New England in 1637; the date of his actual conversion was closer to the turn of the 17th century, a time in which illness was not well understood and was in fact feared.
