narrator who is incredibly self absorbed. They are ultimately very narcissistic and ultimately individuals who believe that nothing is of real importance. This is perhaps because they are so self-absorbed in their own agony, or attempts at discovery. The following paper examines this self centered nature of the two narrators within the stories. Notes From the Underground and The Stranger In both stories it becomes quite clear, right from the beginning, that the narrators are fully focused on their own thoughts, own interpretation of life, and their reality more than anything else. They are also immediately individuals who are not necessarily likeable for one reason or another. For example, in The Stranger the narrator introduces himself by telling the reader, "Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I dont know" (Camus 3). This essentially puts the reader in a position where they know this individual is so caught up in their own world that the importance of a mother dying has little meaning. He quickly goes on to say how it is because he received a telegram and he is unsure of the date, but in all honesty this does not ultimately change how the reader views the self centered nature of the narrator for he never really seems concerned that his mother died. Likewise the narrator in Dostoevskys story is unlikable from the beginning, establishing his worth: "I AM A SICK MAN.... I am a spiteful man. I am an unattractive man" He continues and tells the reader how he is sick but he will surely not go to a doctor: "I dont consult a doctor for it, and never have, though I have a respect for medicine and doctors" (Dostoevsky 50).
