voice his feelings about people who are attracted to the same sex, which calls "Queerness" (Woodson 58). He becomes defensive and asks why he should care if a teacher is
gay and his mother says, "I care because theyre people, Melanin Sun. Because Ive raised you to care" (Woodson 59). Then, she confesses that she has fallen in love with
another woman, a woman that Melanin knows to be white. Melanin subsequently goes through all of the emotional reactions that one might expect from a male teen, including the
fear that "May Mama hated men. Maybe she hated me" (Maran). However, after retreating into sullen silence, Melainin is eventually reconciled to his mother and her partner because he comes
to see that his mothers partner, Kristin, in human terms, as a person, not as a representative of the white race. By caring, Melanin reconnects with himself and his upbringing,
He comments, "I didnt know if it would ever stop mattering what people thought. But I was sure of Mama, sure of my notebooks...sure of myself" (Maran). Implied within this
attitude is that he may never become fully accepting of his mothers relationship, but that, ultimately, this did not have anything to do with their relationship as people. Reflection
