their history, who invented them and why, and some of the good and bad influences they have on us. Development A notebook computer is "a small mobile personal computer, usually
weighing from one to three kilograms, depending on size, materials and other factors" (Laptop, 2006). The terms "laptop" and "notebook," while often used interchangeably, indicate machines that are slightly different
(Laptop, 2006). "Laptop" is the older term and indicates a machine that is slightly larger than a notebook (Laptop, 2006). The term laptop appeared in 1983 when a computer called
the Gavilan SC reached the market; the "notebook computer" label was "used to differentiate smaller devices such as those of the Compaq LTE series in 1989"; this machine is approximately
the same size as a sheet of A4 paper (Laptop, 2006). The term "laptop" is misleading, since most such machines may become too hot for a user to hold; some
are also too heavy, at least the early models (Laptop, 2006). Laptops (or notebooks, as well call them from now on) "are capable of the same tasks as a
desktop PC, although they are typically less powerful for the same price" (Laptop, 2006). They have some of the same components as the desk models, but "are miniaturized and optimized
for mobile use and efficient power consumption" (Laptop, 2006). They usually have liquid crystal displays, a built-in keyboard, and a touchpad, rather than a mouse (Laptop, 2006). Notebook computers may
be classified as "ultraportables," "thin-and-lights," or "medium sized" (Laptop, 2006). An ultraportable is designed for people who need small, light machines, such as business travelers (Laptop, 2006). They typically have
screens less than 12 inches diagonally and weigh less than 1.7 kg (Laptop, 2006). Because they are small and light, they tend to be extremely expensive (Laptop, 2006). The "thin-and-lights"
