this nation (Emory University Center for Health in Aging, 2001). The most common cause for morbidity and mortality among these patients is infections, in fact, between 26 and 50 percent
of all transfers to hospitals are the result of infections (Emory University Center for Health in Aging, 2001). In these facilities, "urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common infections,
sources of bacteremia, reason for hospital transfer, and antibiotic prescription" (Emory University Center for Health in Aging, 2001). The costs of these infections is high both in terms of dollar
cost and in quality of life for the patient (Emory University Center for Health in Aging, 2001). The 1980s recognized that there was a problem of infections in long-term
care facilities and in hospitals (Dimond, 1994). These are called nosocomial infections, meaning they were institutionally-acquired (Dimond, 1994). Despite the measures taken to try to stem the tide of nosocomial
infections, unless new procedures are found soon, the nosocomial UTIs are likely to increase because there is an ever-growing number of elderly people who need long term care (Dimond, 1994;
