In this Northrop states that the simple temporal view of history is correct, and that world history can be separated into two ages; one of divergence and one of convergence. The theory of the latter part of the thesis is referred to as the great convergence theory. In both ages the pattern is not singular as there will be movement towards and away from either convergence or divergence, but the dominant movement will be first divergence and then convergence. Question 2 The essay is constructed in an interesting fashion. When looking at historical arguments or articles, especially those discussing the way that history has been observed and interpreted, tend to focus on presenting a chronological argument, presenting the different events and then linking them together in order to gain meaning through vertical and horizontal integration. Instead Northrop takes a number of perspectives and approaches, examining the issues from these different approaches. The construction is carefully managed with a strong introduction stating the thesis and putting forwards the idea for the paper and the inspiration for the different arguments. The paper is then divided into sections. Where there are a large number of arguments that are spread over the same chronological period it may be argued that this is a logical structure (Donald et al, 1995).
