following the Civil War tensions continued as the South still did not accept the freeing of slaves and so further oppressed African Americans for many decades following the war. The
ideals of the North and the South were different, and those differences grew, especially in light of the power possessed in the North by the President. As such one must
understand that the tensions, and the war, were not simply based on one issue, that being slavery, but on many conditions and issues. The following paper examines the time prior
to the Civil War, looking at the attitudes and conditions between the two forces which ultimately led to the Civil War. North and South: Prior to the Civil
War The student requesting this paper notes that, "From the Mexican War in 1846 up to the firing upon Fort Sumter in 1861, Northerners increasingly had a difficult time understanding
Southern actions and arguments." In the North there was a sense of modernity, so to speak. People were further along in relationship to technology and the future of electricity, and
the North experienced far more global interactions as they were connected to Europe through trade and communication. It was the home of the government and growing education, and while people
lived simply, many people were middle class as well. In the South the focus was on plantations, farming, and the people were essentially focused in a very different direction than
the north as it involves technology, the future, and education. In light of these very strong differences the North had trouble really understanding the South and their attitudes for the
