NAICS - which replaced the U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system - was a joint effort among Canada, Mexico and the United States whereby business activity statistics are more
readily and efficiently compared between and among industries in order to detect the diversity inherent to ever-changing business trends. Industries directly impacted by the pertinent data NAICS provides include
such heavy hitters as the bureau of economic analysis, internal revenue service, bureau of labor statistics, census bureau and small business administration. Of all the industries where NAICS is involved,
perhaps none is as important as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and its ongoing quest to decrease toxic emissions. As of 2006, the EPA has incorporated NAICS into its
arsenal of monitoring processes, with this particular system helping to push forth efforts to keep a check on toxics release inventory (TRI) by providing codes. This inclusion will boost
the EPAs overall supervision by adding no fewer than ten full-time workers who "manufacture, process or otherwise use toxic TRI-listed chemicals and that are required under the Emergency Planning and
Community Right-to-Know Act and the Pollution Prevention Act to report annually to EPA, and state their environmental releases and other waste management quantities of chemicals" (Anonymous, 2006, p. 1).
