the Chesapeake Bay area are far different in character than those in New England. This paper considers the development of the various English colonial societies in early America. Discussion The
beginning of European settlement in the New World occurs with the voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1492 (Faragher et al, 2000). However, actual successful settlements werent established until the arrival
of the English in the Chesapeake Bay region, where they established Jamestown in 1607; it was the "first permanent English settlement in North America" (Faragher et al, 2000, p. 54).
The French and Spanish had a presence in the New World as well, but for our purposes we want to consider only the English colonies. Colonies are founded for one
purpose only: they are supposed to generate revenue for the country that sends the colonists. They are not high-minded institutions dedicated to exploration, but business ventures, and they are expected
to repay the investment the mother country makes in them. In the case of Jamestown, the English "were unable to support themselves" and found themselves dependent upon the local tribes,
as had been the case with the earlier Roanoke colonists (Faragher et al, 2000). (The Roanoke colony disappeared off the face of the earth, an enduring historical mystery.) Jamestown residents
became so dependent on the Indians that they took to raiding them; the Algonquin chief, Powhatan, decided to starve them out, and left them to die during the winter of
1609-1610; he reduced them from 900 to 60 (Faragher et al, 2000). England was determined not to lose this colony and sent more people the next year and by 1613,
between the diseases of the newcomers and the war they waged against him, Powhatan was beaten and the colony firmly established (Faragher et al, 2000). The colonists soon found
