is evident that the Normandy landings constituted a vital and significant turning-point in the development of the Second World War, from a number of tactical perspectives. For example, the way
in which the entire operation was planned and carried out clearly shows the effective way in which the co-operation of different Allied nations was elicited in order to enact a
series of successful strategies. For instance,
there were prior to the invasion a series of intelligence strategies put into effect so that the Allies could make extremely elaborate preparations without the enemy becoming aware of their
prospective plans. This involved not only a high level of secrecy on the part of all those who were involved in the operation, but also the dissemination of false information
in order to mislead the German forces. For example, the second airborne division created was entitled the 6th, in order to give the impression that the British already had five
such divisions, when in fact there was only one. In addition to the British, American, Canadian and other forces were involved in the operation, as well as the French resistance
movement, and it is notable that all were able to maintain the requisite high level of security in the time leading up to the invasion.
Planning for the operation itself began a year before the invasion, the
initial strategies being drawn up at the Quebec Conference in 1943. It was becoming clear that without a significant and determined action on the part of the Allies, the Germans
