Torvald and his wife Nora, and the idea that what is right and what is legal are not always the same thing. The play might be termed a "domestic tragedy," because the issues it deals with are personal and matter only to a handful of people. But these issues turn lives upside down. This paper discusses Noras idea of the "wonderful thing" and why, at the end of the play, it does not happen for her and her husband. Discussion Nora has been sheltered, coddled and treated like a child for her entire life, first by her father and now by her husband. He refers to her in the most patronizing terms, calling her his "little songbird," his "little lark" and his "little squirrel," thereby reducing her from an adult woman to an animal, a pet (Ibsen, 2004). Despite this, she loves him unreservedly, and when he becomes seriously ill, she borrows money to take him to Italy for a year so he can get well; they spend a year in Italy and when they return, his health is restored (Ibsen, 2004). But in order to finance the trip Nora borrows money, secretly, from a man named Krogstad (Ibsen, 2004). It is questionable enough that she does this without telling her husband, but she commits fraud when she signs her fathers name to the bond (Ibsen, 2004). (We can assume that her father was what we would call a co-signer.) Because her father is dying, Nora chooses not to ask him to sign, and forges his signature and the date; Krogstad catches her and threatens to tell Torvald (Ibsen, 2004).
