Nonverbal communication can include the way in which a person manipulates personal space, the use of eye contact, posture, gesturing, the use of physical adornments (and attire), the context or type of message presented and the physiological responses to communications (Blatner, 2002). In the global business arena, companies can benefit from understanding the way in which nonverbal communications impact the messages being conveyed. In fact, in a culturally diverse business climate, nonverbal communication can have a variety of meanings. The Basics Communication can be broken down into three basic areas: verbal communication, in which communications are made vocally and directly; written communication, in which ideas are expressed on paper or in e-mail; and nonverbal communication, in which ideas are expressed without the use of spoken language. Of these, nonverbal communication may be the most difficult to fully understand, because it not only includes what is obviously expressed (through oral or written language), but also what is implied (through body language, the format of the communication, etc.). Many people are not even aware of their nonverbal communications when it is happening. Tidwell (2004) maintained that nonverbal communication is the "nonverbal stimuli in a communication setting...generated by both the source/speaker and his or her use of the environment." Tidwell argued that nonverbal communication has the ability to impact the potential value of the message to the listener. More concretely, it was Tidwells contention that nonverbal communication is a mode of sending and receiving messages without the use of verbalization, and these messages often go hand-in-hand with verbal or written messages.
