packaged wrapped in brown paper and tied with a string. Lucretia had a tear in her eye as she handed it off to Sophia, who asked if she could
open it. Lucretia merely nodded. Sophia opened the package and inside was an apron, somewhat worn but carefully preserved. Lucretia explained that the apron was a family
tradition from grandmother to granddaughter. Since Lucretia had no granddaughters, his grandsons wife would have to be the recipient of the apron. Sophia is my grandmother, my
nonna, and her apron, il grembiule, has been a constant in the kitchen of my familys home since the day she received it. On my 13th birthday, Nonna told
me that Lucretia had given her the apron, but that she was unsure of how long the apron had been a family tradition. What was significant for Sophia was
that her husbands grandmother entrusted her with an article that meant so much to her. At first glance, though, the apron does not look like much. The apron is
primarily white, with some red and green piping and a large image of an eagle in the middle. The apron has two large ties that go around the waste
and some tattered ribbon in the front that was clearly decorative. There is a large pocket on the left front of the apron that is torn and theres a
