African American people. Following the Civil War there were several texts which came out that discussed what slavery was like for those who experienced it. They were called slave narratives and they opened up the world of the written word to the African Americans in many ways. It not only inspired many to read, but also left a legacy that urged African Americans to write. The following paper examines two slave narratives and a fictional piece of work which involves the issues of slavery in order to illustrate how such works have been an important part of the evolution and development of the African American people. The works discussed are "The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass" by Douglass, "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" by Harriet Jacobs, and "Beloved" by Toni Morrison. Frederick Douglass "The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass" is essentially a story filled with numerous discoveries as one man struggles through issues of slavery, is troubled with thoughts of freedom, and eventually comes into a place in his life where he deals with freedom from slavery. In this work we see many experiences, experiences which truly reflected the struggles of the African American, and experiences that became part of the social consciousness. One of Douglass first discoveries, or one of the most important first discoveries, he made was that of the realities of slavery. As a child he was unaware of the harsh realities of slavery, being a child and living relatively simply without violence.
