gold standard for treating patients with aggressive NHL in its advanced stages is to use chemotherapy either as a single option or in combination with local-field radiation therapy ("Adult
NHL," 2011). The long-term survival rate for patients on doxorubicin-based combination chemotherapy is between 35 and 45 percent, when used along or in combination with radiation therapy ("Adult NHL," 2011).
It has been shown that a combination of rituximab and CHOP (cyclophosphamide plus doxorubicin plus vincristine plus prednisone)(known as R-CHOP) has been shown to promote event-free survival when compared to
using CHOP alone. This study involved 399 patients who were 60 years of age and older in the advanced stages of NHL ("Adult NHL," 2011). Rituximab (Rituxan) is a
"type of monoclonal antibody that attaches to B cells and makes them more visible to the immune system" (Mayo Clinic, 2012). As this indicates this drug is designed to aid
