Essay / Research Paper Abstract
It is commonly believed that the theme presented by Jean Paul Sartre in his 1944 play, No Exit was 'Hell is other people'. By exploring the other writings of Sartre one can begin to understand that the concept he was elucidating in the play was the exact opposite of the externalization of negative emotions. Rather, the play was another forum he chose in which to answer to the critics of the philosophy of existentialism. This 5 page paper asserts that the theme espoused by Sartre is actually the quest for freedom as defined by the individual's acceptance of oneself and the choices made throughout one's lifetime.
