As the title indicates, there are no easy answers to these situations, and their choices are not always admirable. The paper has two sections: in the first, it summarizes five
of the stories and what the moral of each is; in the second, using an additional five stories, it describes a pivotal event in each. Summaries and Morals The first
thing of note is that these stories, although they are written for young people, are neither simple nor simplistic. The situations the kids face are realistic and tough, and there
are many factors that go to make up each one. Lets consider "Bliss at the Burger Bar" by Louise Plummer as our first story. Bliss, the narrator of this
story, is an eighteen year old whose talent and drive have earned her the position of night manager at the Burger Bar. She says shes read Steven Coveys book The
Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and learned to set goals (Plummer, 1997). She is determined to get ahead and demonstrates a great deal of maturity for a girl her
age. Unfortunately, she also demonstrates stubbornness and stupidity: she smokes, and has done since she was 12, despite the warnings and the well-known facts about the dangers of smoking (Plummer,
1997). She attributes the warnings to some sort of liberal conspiracy: "I believe those Republicans who think that theres been a conspiracy in Congress against the tobacco industry" (Plummer, 1997,
p. 28). In other words, she discards facts if they get in the way of what she really wants to do. Her world is shaken by two events. First, a
vagrant she and the rest of the crew call "Old Faithful" comes in and tries to buy some fries, but has only 32 cents. Bliss turns him away, saying that
