to make the same mistakes about this war that his predecessors had made. In fact, Nixon was so determined to end the Vietnam War that he had Kissinger involved in
secret talks with Le Duc Tho of North Vietnam in late 1969 (Columbia University, nd) before he was inaugurated into the presidency. Nixon himself announced to the American public that
it was his intention to bring American troops home and replace them in South Vietnam troops. His intention was to have all American forces out of Vietnam by 1970 (Central
Washington University, nd). It didnt happen. Nixon had a significant number of obstacles in meeting his goals in terms of getting out of Vietnam. One of the strong
driving forces was the fact that America had never lost a war in its history. If Nixon simply withdrew the troops, he would be identified as the first president to
lose a war. Withdrawing the troops was basically the same as losing a war. He was also concerned about simply abandoning South Vietnam and leaving that entire region open to
communist aggression. At the same time, the president was facing strong anti-war movements in this country (Central Washington University, nd). For support, he look towards what he called
the "silent majority" believing that they were really supporting his foreign policies, including Vietnam. Nixon subsequently promised that he would not back down in Vietnam and gave orders to escalate
the bombings in Cambodia (Central Washington University, nd). One of the biggest obstacles to ending the war was the diametrically opposed objectives of North Vietnam and the United
