The following paper examines the impact the Atlantic connection had upon Niumi as seen in Donald R. Wrights work "The World and a Very Small Place in Africa." Niumi Prior to European involvement and the Atlantic connection the people of Niumi traded salt with inland peoples, and the crops that "grew in these soils, for hundreds of years before they had contact with Europeans, were the savanna grains....which before the late nineteenth century, provided the majority of calories for their diet" (Wright, 2004; 44). Trade, throughout history, was very important though as Niumi often suffered from various diseases, affecting people and land and livestock, attributed to their particular area and as such they often traded what they could get from their unique position on the water to keep them alive (Wright, 2004). Niumi often suffered from malaria and yellow fever and many other conditions (Wright, 2004). Niumi was also one of the few places that could not grow more powerful through the possession of horses because the land was so wet most of the year, and as such they could not build on their military cavalry like much of the surrounding region. However, "Niumi kept strict control of the ocean and riverine trade routes in and around the lower Gambia with its fleet of large canoes" (Wright, 2004; 61). Clearly Niumi had its own particular troubles regarding the developments of the surrounding areas, but they also possessed a certain level of power in their particular position, or location.
