Essay / Research Paper Abstract
7 pages in length. To say Senegal's Niokolo-Koba National Park is teeming with wildlife would almost be an understatement considering the vast numbers of species who call this protected land home. However, the word "protected" is used very loosely in this case because of how illegal poaching is threatening the very existence of these myriad animals. Coupled with drought and a proposed dam that will interrupt the flooding necessary for a variety of vegetation that feeds and houses dozens of different species. The elephant - clearly magnificent in his gentle thunder - is on the verge of distinction from the national park along with the lion, leopard and giant derby eland, a catastrophic situation currently being addressed at a feverish pace. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

WILD INHABITANTS Keeping company with more than three hundred and fifty bird species, there is a long list of mammals who inhabit the 9,000 sq km park that includes kob,
warthog, waterbuck, crocodile, hippo, bushbuck, baboon, hartebeest, buffalo, roan antelope, green and hussar monkey, reptiles, fish, snails and worms just to name a few (China Daily, 2007). The biological
interconnection among the life forms in the national park is inextricably entwined within the natural cycle of life and predator/prey relationship, a biodiversity that is not only critical to Niokolo-Koba
National Parks wildlife population but also the entire planets survival because each and every species has a role to play; remove just one and that link in the chain of
life is forever removed and the catalyst for undesirable transformations in the sequence. When man steps in to impart his own personal judgment as to which species should live
in any given area, he drastically upsets the natural arrangement. The vicious cycle that exists begins when species are culled out of their natural habitat through poaching, setting off
a chain of events that impacts the entire ecosystem. Soon, the predator/prey relationship is severely compromised, effectively leaving no natural predator to keep the prey population in check.
