process of meeting the challenge of becoming a moral corporation. Ferrell (2006) reports that for years, Nike has been condemned by consumers for running sweatshops in Asia, Africa and Mexico.
Nike continues to claim it is not responsible for the business ethics of other companies in other nations. However, this is not modern business practice. In the United States, all
businesses are required to know the ethics of the suppliers and the third parties with which they work or contract. If any are found unethical, all are deemed so. This,
like all processes is learned until a business model is developed for a company. A model that Nike is being held to today can be framed within Kohlbergs Six Stages
of Moral Development. Ethics, or course, are defined by every company, but there are certain ethical expectations by U.S. consumers that dictate business
ethics. Nikes founder, Knight was happy in his success. He had hit the ground running and then was suddenly stopped. Stage 1,
2 and 3 The companys problems started when Knight denied human rights violations, and in fact denied knowing about the poor factory and
labor conditions (Ferrell, 2006). Unfortunately, evidence shows that he had been aware for years about the severe conditions. Nike then succumbed to the punishment meted out by consumers. In a
response that helped retain some consumers, Nike said it had resolved the issues in the factory. This was later discovered not to be true. Nike had made preliminary explorations of
the problem, but felt its hands were tied because it could not dictate policy to its suppliers. It continued to conduct business as usual, making some inroads in Mexico, but
