own supply chain can be used to create efficiency and the development a global value chain occurs. One company that has undertaken this type of operation is Nike, if
we look at this company we can appreciate their global value chain. Nike is a well known brand name for sportswear, including footwear. Named after the Greek Goddess of
Victory this firm has attempted to emulate its namesake and become a major supplier, and in doing so has met with much success. This American based firm sells anything sports
related from trainers and football boots to T-shirts and sweatbands, however, only a small amount of this may be manufactured in the countries where it has the largest sales (Thompson,
2005). With the opening up of markets and a larger amount of pull factors we can see that Nike are making a success of many markets, even Russia where the
goods may cost the equivalent of a months salary and China in more recent years (Singer, 1997). At the same time as the
increase in markets there has also been an increase in the number and availability of competitors as Nike are operating in a market where there are few barriers to entry
and the customers hold a great deal of power due to the high level of substitutes. This may be seen as the
reason that international expansion has been needed in order to regain lost revenue. The same situation has also been seen in many of the Nike competitors, competitors such as Reebok,
