beings if given the chance. One of the thematic elements in the story is that which relates to night and day. The following paper examines this thematic element, speaking of
symbolism, and discussing how it is presented and why Shakespeare seemed to have utilized night and day into the play. Night and Day: Macbeth
When reading or watching Macbeth many people will have different impressions about the man and his actions. Some may claim, and perhaps rightly so, that it was
essentially his wife that forced much of the action, nagging and pushing Macbeth to his vicious acts. Others may argue that Macbeth is simply an example of how man is
an inherently selfish and evil creature. One author notes that, "Is Macbeth mad or evil or both or neither? Shakespeare gives us no answers. He doesnt judge his characters, but
simply writes their words and their actions" leaving all interpretation up to the audience (Schulman). In these respects the thematic element of night and day becomes just as confusing and
as ambiguous perhaps, for Shakespeare presented the social understanding of night and day throughout the play, but also leaves all true interpretation up to the reader/viewer. This is evident in
the characters and how they all go about trying to define the night and day while engaged in various activities. In the
first excerpt to be examined one of the witches, when telling of the prophecy, notes that, "Sleep shall neither night nor day Hang upon his pent-house lid; (Shakespeare I ii).
This indicates that there is no delineation between night and day when large matters are of a concern. Night and day have no division no difference when truths and deeds
