SA203Ntz.rtf Many are familiar with the term Superman from the American comic strip character everyone has come to know and love. The big Superman symbol of "S" in fact had been worn in Godspell, a musical that would depict Jesus Christ as somewhat of a Superman and in fact, in the philosophical realm, that idea is not far fetched. Nietzsches concept of the Superman, or Overman, is relevant to his beliefs on religion as well as the necessity of man to rise above himself. Nietzsche wrote Thus Spake Zarathustra in February of 1883 ("Friedrich," 2002). The philosophers primary idea was that traditional values which were fostered by Christianity had lost their power in respect to the lives of individuals (2002). He also proclaimed that God is dead (2002). While the philosopher claims that God is dead, also implicit in that assumption is the idea that God at least did exist. Nothing that does not exist could be dead or alive. Therefore, Nietzsche does believe in God to some degree. Although he may acknowledge the existence or concept of God, he rejects Christianity that accepts a benevolent and living God who is infinite in a myriad of ways. Because God is deemed to be dead, Nietzsche sees it necessary for something else to come about; the emergence of the ?bermensch, or the Superman or overman, is supposed to be a replacement for God ("Friedrich," 2002).
