in the story. Discussion The story follows Julian and his mother, a woman over 50 who goes downtown every week to a "reducing class at the Y" (OConnor). She wont
ride the buses alone since integration, and thus forces Julian to accompany her, something he resents bitterly (OConnor). On the night the events of this story take place, his mother
spends a good deal of her time second-guessing herself about a hat she bought; she feels guilty for spending the money but wanted the hat (OConnor). Julian, exasperated with her
waffling, snaps "Yes, you should have bought it ... Lets go" (OConnor). The adversarial relationship between the two colors the entire story. Julian fancies himself a liberal, but his mother
is a racist. She doesnt like blacks and fancies herself superior even as she fears them (OConnor). Julian fantasizes about making friends with black people; perhaps even bring home a
girl to shock his mother (OConnor). But Julian is racist too: he considers befriending only accomplished blacks, like attorneys or doctors, and the girl in his imagination is beautiful (OConnor).
Her dislike doesnt extend to children; she thinks black children are "cuter" than whites, and when a woman and her son board the bus she and Julian are taking downtown
to the Y, his mother plays with the child (OConnor). She doesnt see that the childs mother is a volcano ready to explode; shes sick and tired of the patronizing
attitude of whites, the hostility and bigotry she faces every day (OConnor). Julian recognizes it, however, and tries to stop his mother from her goofy playing with the boy (OConnor).
