Gatsby, the underlying truth is that the narrator, Nick, is one of the most important characters in the novel. In many ways the novel is about Nick and his perception
of the American Dream and his own particular development as a man of honor and integrity. The following paper discusses the character of Nick and examines his own personal experiences
and discoveries. Nick In the very beginning of the story we see that Nick is a reasonable, intelligent, and perhaps compassionate individual. We know this because one
of the first things he tells us is "In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that Ive been turning over in my mind ever
since. Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, he told me, just remember that all the people in this world havent had the advantages that youve had" (Fitzgerald NA). This sets
the stage for the reader to see that Nick is probably a man who does not necessarily judge others, but tries to see the good in people and in situations.
This is truly the kind of young man he is. As the story progresses he encounters many people who could easily corrupt a young man who was just embarking
on the world scene. And, we know that the one individual who could perhaps sway him from his innocent and noble ways is Gatsby himself, for Nick admires him. But,
the character of Nick is strong enough in his honor and integrity to admire Nick, but also feel for him in that he probably lost his own honor and integrity
