Eleventh through the Twentieth Centuries, the author discusses Nguyens Tale of Kieu in terms of Vietnamese nationalism and what it means to an individual in the heart of battle.
Dinh-Hoa Nguyen calls Nguyen Dus poetry an "exquisite rendition" of the topic of war and the battlefield (in "Calling All Souls"), and most particularly, what is left of a mans
soul when he is on the front and also after he walks away from battle.1 Just as Nguyen Du presents the theme of
soul through the lands people in his epic poem, Dinh-Hoa Nguyen juxtaposes his descriptions of Vietnam with lines of the poem to create the same effect. He also uses
narrative descriptions in the same vein to provide a brief history of the writer and his work, using the land metaphor used by Nguyen Du because it "allows the reader
to fully appreciate Vietnamese views" not only about their own society, but also the "role of art in life, and social conflicts."2 In
her article, Obdurate History: Dinh Q. Le, the Vietnam War, Photography, and Memory, Moira Roth has traveled back to Vietnam to learn the obdurate history of the country on the
20th anniversary of the Vietnam War. On her way, she recalls that 3 million Vietnamese and 58,000 American solders died on the ground on which she walks, land with
