perception of a small or large community. Memoirs may provide a different kind of insight into a small segment of a population. For instance, in 1981, Richard Rodriguez wrote about
his own education and his success in the world in Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez. This is his own personal account of his life and his perceived
alienation from his Mexican heritage. There is also a danger in memoirs insofar as it is like a case study. It reflects only the authors perception and that may not
really reflect the reality for the rest of the world. Other memoirs like Lucy Larcoms 1889 account in her A New England Girlhood are more factual and provide the reader
an account that is more likely to be accurate and valid. This kind of memoir even provides insight into the society at the time and the same experiences by others
in the community. Certainly, what has the most influence on society as a whole is mass media. Mass media, newspapers and magazines and then, the radio, had a dramatic impact
on society. When these venues were invented, people could gain information and insight about things that happened beyond their own small town or community. First, they learned about events and
people in a region and then, they were able to access news across the country. The influence of mass media on society has grown exponentially in the last fifty years.
