The way that we regard crime in our society can be affected tremendously by the media. Laws are written and enforced, of course,
to protect the good of the citizenry that they regulate. In order to be classified as a crime an act has to be against the law. Some types
of crime, however, seem to capture our attention more so than other types of crime. Some types of crime are regarded by the general public as horrid while other
types of crime are practically ignored, even accepted, by the general public. White collar crime, for example, seems to be more tolerated than do crimes involving violence. White
collar crime is often viewed as less serious than typical crimes such as burglary, rape, and even murder. Never-the-less, white collar crime is a very real problem in
our society, a problem that deserves the same degree of attention as does predatory crimes. The media, however, does not always oblige us in covering the various types of
crime with the same degree of seriousness. Newspapers, in particular, can vary considerably in this regard. There is no way to justify
why newspapers obviously prefer covering one type of crime to another. There are, however, certain facts that must be taken into consideration when considering this phenomenon. It is
