this goal, good communication between parents and the center is essential and a weekly or monthly newsletter can serve this purpose, as it provides a means for the center to
convey to parents what their children are doing and learning (Rodger, 2011). Newsletters can also provide an ideal format for conveying to parents information that need to know concerning
child development. For example, David Riley, a child development specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Extension, is the lead author and project director of a series of 12 educational newsletters,
which provide new parents in Wisconsin with valuable information ("Newsletter," 2008). One mother, a reader of Rileys newsletter, recounts that she was to the breaking point when her baby simply
would not stop crying and then she remembered a line from the newsletter, which pointed out that babies do not cry to make their parents feel bad, they cry because
they feel bad ("Newsletter," 2008). While this did not change the situation, it changed this parents reaction to the situation, as she was no longer angry at her
baby, but rather felt sorry for her babys pain. As this indicates, a newsletter, written in simple language, but also steeped in valuable information about child development can be highly
influential on parental behavior. The first newsletter should convey to parents the philosophy of teaching, as well as behavior management, employed by the care center, as well as the
classroom expectations for the children (Staples and Diliberto, 2010). This information should also include care center policy regarding sickness, i.e., that a child with a fever over 100 degrees F.
should be kept at home. Additionally, the newsletter should describe policy regarding inclement weather, such as how parents will be notified if inclement weather necessitates the center closing.
