Corruption is rampant in some parts of the world - bribery, kickbacks, misuse of funds, fraud - these and more unethical practices have led to both businesses and governments collapsing. This was the case in the Far East. Corruption had reached unprecedented proportions but it was ignored until the East Asian crisis and billions of dollars worth of aid and investments vanished into thin air. No country is totally exempt from unethical business practices but such behavior is far more prevalent in some countries than others. In fact, such practices are so prevalent in some nations that other countries are demanding anti-corruption language in their trading agreements (Walsh, 1998). Transparency International is an organization in Berlin that pushes for the end of corruption. Each year, Transparency publishes a list rating different nations in terms of the degree of corruption in business practices, including such things as bribery, graft, outright fraud. In 1998, the worst nations included Nigeria, Bolivia, Colombia and Russia. At the other end of the pendulum in terms of the degree of corrupt practices were Denmark, Finland, Sweden and New Zealand. These last nations had the least amount of corrupt business practices (Walsh, 1998). In terms of international comparison, then, New Zealand is a nation with the least amount of unethical behavior practices. This is not surprising since New Zealand has a focus on ethical business practices. Consider the Code of Ethics the New Zealand Convention Association publishes for its members.
