and hundreds of spectacular architectural monuments that stand in honor of New York Citys heritage. II. WOOLWORTH BUILDING Architect Cass Gilbert took
three years - from 1910 to 1913 - to construct what was to become one of New York Citys most beloved landmarks: The Woolworth Building. As one of the
earliest skyscrapers to grace the New York skyline, the corporate headquarters that was the Woolworth Building - owned by five and dime king Frank W. Woolworth - was constructed from
terra cotta cladding with an urban context and temperate climate. Its Neo-Gothic appearance stands out an amazing sixty stories high and is representative of the best of medieval architecture
(Woolworth Building). "Designed to reach the then incredible height of fifty-five stories, it rises just short of 761 feet at the top of the pyramidal spire. As Flagg
did, Gilbert has a tower shaft that rises from a supporting block base, but to maximize the expression of height (and to provide associations with other historic tall buildings) Gilbert
used Gothic motifs. The piers at the corners of the supporting block and the main tower piers are widened, but nowhere are they stopped by horizontals. At the
