his realization about them? In answering this question, a student might want to look at Fitzgeralds work The Great Gatsby. The lead protagonist and narrator in the Great Gatsby is Nick Carraway. He is rather young and talks about what happens in New York City one summer. Some symbolism used are the green eyes and Codys yacht, two things that perhaps represent the wealth that had been compiling in New York at the time. Another important symbol is the dichotomy between East and West that Fitzgerald duly notes. Here, the evil East is compared to the still innocent West and is equated with what Nick Carraway called "thrilling returning trains of my youth...thrown by lighted windows on the snow" ("Francis," 2003, p.PG). Both symbols may be contrasted with the virgin past of the United States where the vanished trees and trees that were present made way for Gatsbys house (2003). Three symbols of New York as appear in the work are the yacht, the green eyes, and the East versus West paradigm. The yacht is symbolic of wealth of course and green is the color of money. The East and West each symbolize evil and good respectively. He did perhaps change his ideology over time and student writing on this subject might say that he had softened his opinion. The symbols in other works were of course different to some extent, but Fitzgerald did tend to rely on symbolism and did categorize New York in a variety of ways over time. 2.
